American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Review – Free Amazon Prime and a $50 Bonus

For years, American Express has been known as a card issuer that charges annual fees.  That reputation has been fading, though, due in large part to the introduction of the American Express Blue Cash Everyday® credit card.

This card features an easy to use rewards program — and one that is reasonably generous.  On top of that, there is no annual fee.

The American Express Blue Cash Everday card can be of benefit to those who use their cards for everyday purchases, as the name implies.  Read on for our American Express Blue Cash review…

Blue Cash Everyday Rewards

There are three different tiers when it comes to the Blue Cash Everyday card:

  • 3% cash back at stand-alone U.S. grocery stores
  • 2% cash back at stand-alone U.S. gas stations and select major department stores
  • 1% cash back on everything else

These are not rotating categories; they remain fixed throughout the year.  This makes understanding your rewards program especially easy.  Other cards may offer higher percentages but they may also have rotating categories you need to track and opt into.  This isn’t the case with Blue Cash.

Blue Cash Everyday credit card

The Blue Cash Everyday offers up an easy-to-understand rewards program.

What you receive are “rewards dollars” that can be turned in for statement credits as well as gift cards and merchandise.  Once your reward dollar balance is at least 25 you can redeem.

There is no cap on the cash back you can earn, and you don’t have to worry about reaching a specific threshold before you can see the higher cash back amounts.

For the first $6,000 you spend at the supermarket you get 6%, after that it’s 1%.

It’s very straightforward.

As you can see, you can use this card to best effect by doing all of your shopping with it.  Just make sure that you pay off your balance each month so that you don’t end up offsetting the rewards by paying a high rate of interest.

Blue Cash Everyday Bonus

It is also worth noting that if you use the card to spend $1,000 in the first three months, you will receive a 50 Reward Dollar bonus.  That’s not bad at all, especially considering that the right planning can mean huge regular rewards on top of that.  This can be redeemed for a $50 statement credit.

A Free Year of Amazon Prime

A new perk to the Blue Cash Everyday card is a free year of Amazon Prime.  If you satisfy the bonus requirement for the points and sign up for Amazon Prime you will get a statement credit for the cost.

I love using Amazon Prime.  It’s great knowing that most things I buy on Amazon will get to me in 2 days (you get 2-day shipping on your Prime-eligible purchases).

Other Features of the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card

There are additional perks that come with the Blue Cash Everyday card.

You will receive the following when you make purchases with your AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card:

  • Purchase Protection: Your purchases are covered against theft and accidental damage for up to 90 days within purchase.
  • Return Protection: Return the item within 90 days and AmEx will refund the purchase price, up to $1,000 annually ($300 limit per item). However, the merchant mush already have refused to take the item back.
  • Extended Warranty: Instead of buying an extended warranty, you can have a free warranty. The terms of the original manufacturer’s warranty are matched up to one additional year on eligible purchases.

Do you travel?

Use your Blue Cash Everyday card for car rental and take advantage of American Express’ Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance at no extra charge.  And if you ever need help while on vacation you can call the Global Assist® Hotline 24/7 for medical, financial, legal, and other emergency assistance (you need to be travelling more than 100 miles from home).

Get your friends in on the action

If you refer your friends to the card and they sign up you will get a $25 bonus.  Look, if you get the card and love it why not let your friends know?

Annual APR

You may be eligible for 15 months of 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers.  This is great if you have some big purchases coming up since you have the flexibility to pay your balance over time or if you are carrying a credit balance on another card.

These additional features can really help you find value in this card.

American Express has long been recognized as a “preferred” company, and it is a fairly prestigious card.  And, with the recent changes to include a more generous rewards program, the Blue Cash Everyday card can be a good choice for someone with excellent credit.

It is also worth noting that you can get a Blue Cash Preferred card from American Express.  This card comes with a $75 annual fee, but it also comes with more generous cash back rewards, with tiers of 6%, 3%, and 2%.  If you find that you are using your Blue Cash credit card enough, it might be worth it to switch to a Preferred card and really boost your savings.  Even after paying the annual fee, you could come out ahead.

You can see the Blue Cash Everyday is an easy card to understand rewards card that gives you a nice cash back with no annual fee.  You also get 15 months of 0% APR on purchases and balance tranfers.  On top of that you get the outstanding customer service that only American Express provides.

With the 0% intro APR on both purchases and balance transfers the Blue Cash Everyday competes well with cards like the Discover it® card and the Citi Simplicity® card.

The Blue Cash Everyday is really a great card to have!
